Leon Panetta to head CIA

Leon Panetta (pictured), Bill Clinton's former chief of staff, will head the CIA in President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

As reported at the link below, this is causing surprise and a bit of consternation by several individuals involved in the intelligence community.

Panetta is a surprise pick since he has no experience in the intelligence world.

Taken by surprise was Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., incoming chairwoman of the Select Senate Intelligence Committee.

The report says that Senator Sen. Dianne Feinstein said: “I was not informed about the selection of Leon Panetta to be the CIA director. I know nothing about this, other than what I've read. My position has consistently been that I believe the agency is best-served by having an intelligence professional in charge at this time."

(Sarcasm on) It could have been worse. Obama could have picked William Ayers as CIA Chief. After all, Ayers knows a lot about terrorism.

But why stop there - why not pick disgraced Governor Rod Blagojevich to head the FBI? (sarcasm off).

It seems that the president-elect has only two groups to choose from: friends from his community organizing days in Chicago or the regurgitation of people from the old Bill Clinton administration.

Harry Reid teaches Civics 101

Senator Reid (pictured) says he has “legal authority” to bar any pick by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill the Senate seat held by president-elect Barack Obama.

Under the Constitution, Reid said, "We determine who sits in the Senate. And the House (of Representatives) determines who sits in the House. So there's clearly legal authority for us to do whatever we want to do. This goes back for generations."

Reid also said there is “room to negotiate.”

So, why do we bother with elections? Just let Harry Reid appoint Senators.

Maybe, if the country is lucky, Reid will lose his bid for re-election in 2010.

A Wall Street Journal article here reports that:

Sen. Reid … faces a potentially tough fight. A recent Research 2000 poll of likely voters put his approval rating at 38% and his disapproval rating at 54%, a possible reflection of voters' displeasure with gridlock and partisanship in Washington.

Plump Oprah asks How did this happen again?

Oprah admits to her ongoing “battle of the bulge.” She blames her weight gain on failure to find a work/life balance.

Oprah Winfrey blames the mild depression she suffered after gaining so much weight last year on working too much at the expense of taking the time to relax.

She said on her television show that she was miserable. Not admitting she had depression, she vowed to change her attitude towards food.

The 54-year-old, who at one point tipped the scales at 14.3 stone (200 pounds), said she was determined to change in 2009.

It’s not about food. It’s about “using food - abusing food.”

Oprah posed next to a picture of her thinner 2005 self on the cover of January's O Magazine (lower photo).

BIG government planned with 600,000 new employees!

We have all heard about the Democrat philosophy of tax and spend and big government. Looks like we ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

The president-elect (pictured) says he wants to "create three million new jobs" -- this is a change from a few weeks ago, when he said he wanted the plan to create OR SAVE two million jobs.

He says the "No. 1 goal of my plan ... is to create three million new jobs, more than 80 percent of them in the private sector.”

If you do the math: 20 percent of three million means 600,000 new government employees.

Obama has a name for his new plan -- the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan."

His dream is to be another FDR. Let’s hope he doesn’t bankrupt the country in the process!

President-elect to face a chaotic Senate

A series of major distractions await the president-elect.

The new U.S. Senate is set to convene in a swirl of allegations of corruption, and dynastic nepotism that threatens to dog the early days of Barack Obama's presidency.

The class of 2009 could face a chaotic swearing-in ceremony.

In the most high-profile standoff, Obama's designated replacement for Illinois, Roland Burris, could be stopped from taking his seat by fellow Democrats.

The Democrat claiming victory in Minnesota faces serious allegations of voter fraud. Some Minnesota precincts show more votes than registered voters. Some votes for the Minnesota Democrat candidate were mysteriously found in a poll workers car (the poll worker was a Democrat) and that is just two discrepancies in the Minnesota election fiasco.

Last, but not least, is the New York Senate seat occupied by Hillary Clinton. A member of the legendary Kennedy clan is determined to get that seat.

The senatorial to-and-fro is an unwelcome distraction for Obama as he prepares to take office on January 20, reliant on a focused Congress to enact his ambitious plans including a mammoth economic stimulus package.

iPhone 3G has been unlocked by tech group

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Apple iPhone G3 has been unlocked by a band of “independent programmers” allowing the owner to use it on unauthorized wireless networks.

Since the original iPhone was launched in June 2007, Apple has struck partnerships with wireless carriers world-wide, such as AT&T Inc. in the U.S. and France Telecdom SA's Orange unit.

Under the agreements, the iPhone can generally be used only by subscribers to those carriers.

A group called the iPhone Dev Team released a free piece of software called "yellowsn0w" that unlocks the iPhone 3G.

The software lets users reprogram the phones so they can work on any wireless network based on the same technical standard.

The development could lead to a loss in revenue for Apple's wireless partners. International travelers would be able to buy airtime for their iPhones on local wireless networks when they travel abroad, so they don't have to incur steep roaming charges.

An AT&T spokesman said, “the iPhone is meant to be used exclusively on the AT&T network. Any other use of the device is inappropriate and would void the warranty.”

This indicates that using the iPhone on networks other than AT&T with the “patch” is not illegal.

Maybe Apple Chairman and CEO Steve Jobs is getting his comeuppance.

Before Apple, Steve Jobs (pictured above) went into business building and selling “blue boxes” that allowed free illegitimate phone calls by faking the signals used by AT&T.

Jobs once ripped off AT&T and now a group of geeks are ripping off Apple and Apple’s wireless contractor.

What goes around, comes around.

2009: A Starbucks Odyssey

This is penned with all due respect to the memory of Sir Arthur C. Clarke, author of the book 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It all began when a Starbucks gift card mysteriously arrived in my mailbox.

Actually, there was no mystery. Lori mailed it to me last week. She is aware of my affection for iced coffee. Thanks Lori!

I took the card to the nearest Starbucks hoping to pick up a few cans of their Italian roast iced coffee. Come to find out, Starbucks no longer makes the product. No wonder I haven’t been able to find it on grocery store shelves for the last six months or so.

The Starbucks store was nearly empty. There was one other customer and three employees. I found it easy to understand why two Starbucks locations in our little town closed during 2008.

A couple of friendly barista’s rushed over and fawned over me like I was a long-lost friend. The service was great. Six hundred store closings will do that.

They even opened a can of Double Shot so I could have a taste. Didn’t like it. They gave me another sample before I ended up with two large cups of iced coffee to take home.

The coffee was too strong for my taste but it was easy to remedy. After heating the coffee in a microwave, a generous amount of low-fat whipped cream was stirred in before adding a teaspoon of vanilla. It turned out pretty good - almost as good as McDonald’s iced coffee.

Later I’ll pick up some bottles of Frappachino of various flavors. That will be another “take-out” - no fun drinking coffee in an empty store.

It’s 1:00 PM - do you know where your Starbucks store is?

A couple of years ago, new Starbucks stores were popping up like dandelions in the spring.

Now Starbucks stores are closing almost as fast. And that was before the economy downturn that hit hard in the summer of 2008.

Look for even more Starbucks stores closings in 2009.

A report from last July, found at the link below, says:

Starbucks, known for sometimes going so far as to open stores across the street from one another, has recently acknowledged that it may have lost some of its luster during a long period of rapid store openings.

Starbucks Corp. said it has drastically increased the number of stores it plans to close and could eliminate as many as 12,000 full- and part-time positions as a result.

The company said it now plans to close 600 company-operated stores in the United States.

Commuters in some locations could buy their first coffee of the day at their suburban train station, a second at a Starbucks one block from the downtown train station and a third in the lobby of their office building while walking by two others on the way.

Gov Richardson withdraws from commerce secretary post

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (pictured) is withdrawing his nomination to be President-elect Barack Obama's commerce secretary.

Richardson withdrew amid a grand jury investigation into how some of his political donors won a lucrative state contract.

Richardson's withdrawal was the first disruption of Obama's Cabinet process and the second "pay-to-play" investigation that has touched Obama's transition to the presidency.

The president-elect has remained above the fray in both the case of arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the New Mexico case.

A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a New Mexico transportation contract worth more than $1 million.

Richardson said in a statement issued by the Obama transition office that the investigation could take weeks or months but expressed confidence it will show he and his administration acted properly.

The Obama transition team was caught flat-footed on the Richardson impropriety. One wonders why Richardson agreed to accept a post he is unqualified for even without the cloud of his “pay-to-play” scandal back in New Mexico?

The media worked hard to elect Barack Hussein Obama. The Richardson fiasco is a reminder that the media will need to work even harder to gloss over Obama’s miss steps once he occupies the oval office.

TV News winds down Iraq war coverage

America’s three broadcast network news divisions have stopped sending full-time correspondents to Iraq.

The war has gone on longer than a lot of news organizations’ ability or appetite to cover it.

“No appetite to cover Iraq” means now that the war is being won and news from Iraq can no longer be spun into bad news for the Bush administration.

Reid blocking 3 black replacements for Obama

A report at the link below states that:

Top Senate Democrat Harry Reid (pictured) made it clear who he didn’t want in the post: Jesse Jackson, Jr., Danny Davis or Emil Jones.

Rather, Reid called Blagojevich to argue he appoint either state Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Jesse Jackson, Jr., Danny Davis and Emil Jones are all three black. Reid’s choices are Lisa Madigan who is white and Tammy Duckworth is Vietnamese.

Harry Reid says he is concerned about the ability of the appointee to win election in 2010. However, there will always be claims that Reid wants to go back to an all-white Senate as it was before Obama became a Senator.

Rare 1937 Bugatti found in English garage

A $4 million car was found in a northern England garage.

Relatives of Dr. Harold Carr found an extremely rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante -- a Holy Grail for car collectors -- as they were going through his belongings after his death.

The dusty two-seater, unused since 1960, didn't look like much in the garage in Gosforth, near Newcastle in northern England.

But only 17 were ever made, and when it's cleaned up and auctioned in Paris next month, experts believe it will fetch at least 3 million pounds ($4.3 million) and possibly much more.

This particular car is even more valuable because it was originally owned by Earl Howe, a prominent British race car driver, and because its original equipment is intact, so it can restored without relying on replacement parts.

Obama’s Ed Sec failed as a Chicago Education leader

Once again Barack Obama seems to be using the Peter Principle* as he fills cabinet posts.

The Chicago Public Schools, whose superintendent, Arne Duncan, has been tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to be the next education secretary, failed to meet the Illinois state standards set under the No Child Left Behind Act for the last five years.

The Chicago school district is currently on “Academic Watch” status, based on its failure to make adequate progress for four consecutive years--and in year two of academic watch for failure to make required improvements.

Arne Duncan, whom President Obama will nominate as secretary of education, was superintendent of the Chicago Public Schools from 2001 to 2008.

The study specifies grape seed extract not grapes or grape juice.

Baby born on plane over Canada deemed Canadian citizen

A baby girl was born aboard a Northwest Airlines 757 flying over Canada on the way from Amsterdam to Boston.

Two doctors aboard the plane responded to a medical emergency call on the 757’s public address system.

The woman gave birth to a 6-1/2 pound baby girl she named Sasha.

Customs officials said that Sasha was deemed a Canadian citizen, because she was born over Canadian airspace.

Oregon may charge mileage tax

The state of Oregon may charge motorists a mileage tax based on satellite technology.

A year ago, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced it had demonstrated that a new way to pay for roads — via a mileage tax and satellite technology — could work.

Now Gov. Ted Kulongoski says he’d like the legislature to take the next step.

“As Oregonians drive less and demand more fuel-efficient vehicles, it is increasingly important that the state find a new way, other than the gas tax, to finance our transportation system.”

A similar taxing scheme was tentatively planned for the UK but was abandoned because it was found to be too difficult to administer.

Gator Bowl featured big turnaround teams

Clemson was 3-3 when head coach Terry Bowden was terminated. After Dabo Sweeney replaced Bowden, the Tigers ended the regular season in the top 25 and an invitation to the Gator Bowl.

Nebraska had an equally dramatic turnaround compared to their 7 loss 2007 season.

The photo shows Husker quarterback Joe Ganz the Gator Bowl MVP.

Could the Nebraska “black shirt” defense contain the vaunted Clemson “thunder and lightening” duo of C.J. Spiller (lightening) and James Davis (thunder)?

The game announcers kept talking about how “thunder and lightening” would wear down Nebraska’s defense. That never happened as Nebraska’s “black shirts” held Clemson to only 91 yards in the second half.

Bo Pelini’s Husker team won the game 26-21.

Nebraska ended the season with a 9-4 record while Clemson finished with a 7-6 record as reported here.

UK official: man-made climate change is a con

Spending billions on trying to reduce carbon emissions is one giant con that is depriving third world countries of vital funds to tackle famine, HIV and other diseases.

Wilson has been heavily criticized by environmentalists for claiming that ongoing climatic shifts are caused by nature and not mankind.

He claims most commentators on the matter don't have a clue what they are talking about and are only going along with the consensus because the issue is popular.

New Yorkers shred bad memories of 2008

What can we do with bad memories of the year? As reported at the link below, “Should auld acquaintance be forgot? Or maybe just shredded?”

In an event that organizers hope will become a New Year's tradition, New Yorkers and tourists were invited to bring bad memories from 2008 to Times Square on Sunday and feed them to an industrial-strength shredder.

"This is the perfect way to move on from a bad year, from a bad experience," said Kathryn Bonn, of New York City, who shredded a printout of her boyfriend's e-mail breaking up with her.

The event, the second annual "Good Riddance Day," was sponsored by the Times Square Alliance, organizers of the New Year's Eve ball-dropping celebration.

Some participants wrote "the stock market" or "cancer" on a piece of paper and shredded it, while others shredded bags of bank statements and check stubs.

Kate Anello, a Yankees fan from New York City, destroyed a poster of the city's longtime rival, the Boston Red Sox.

"I hate them," she said. "It felt good."

City resident Jay Ballesteros won a $250 prize for the most creative object to be shredded: a sock representing all the socks that emerge from the laundry without their mates.

My favorite is the shredded sock - representing all socks coming back from the laundry without mates.

Defiant Blagojevich names Obama replacement

Embattled Governor Rod Blagojevich has named former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris (pictured) as his choice to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

The decision put his opponents in the uncomfortable position of vowing not to seat a veteran politician who would become the Senate's only black member.

Did Blagojevich cleverly throw race into his appointment of Burris?

How will race play into Harry Reid’s refusal to seat anyone appointed by Rod Blagojevich to fill Barack Obama’s Senate seat?

Obama was the only black member of the U.S. Senate and Roland Burris, the Blagojevich appointee, is also black.

If Reid refuses to seat Burris, and the eventual Obama replacement is white, there could be a firestorm of protest from black leaders.

What will Shanahan do with mega-mansion under construction?

Now that Mike Shanahan is the former Denver Bronco head coach, what will he and his wife Peggy do with the mega-mansion they are building in Cherry Hills?

While the new mega-mansion is under construction, the Shanahan’s are living in the mansion they recently sold to “a friend” for $16 million.

The old Shanahan house is shown above.

The house under construction is a “football throw” away from the old house on a larger lot with more privacy.

Designed by Sall Residential Design Group, the 34,927-square-foot home includes a bowling alley and lounge, a poker room, a video-golf room, a racquetball court and a shuffleboard table, according to the building permit filed with Cherry Hills Village.

And that's just in the basement, where there also will be four bedrooms

Shanahan, the Broncos' head coach since 1995 and the second-longest-tenured coach in the NFL, signed a three-year contract extension with the team last year. He is believed to be one of the best-paid coaches in the league, at more than $5 million a year.

The old Shanahan house story is here. The new house is here.

Shocker! Mike Shanahan fired by Denver Broncos

Shock waves reverberated throughout professional football as Denver Bronco owner Pat Bowlen fired head coach Mike Shanahan.

He was known as a genius, a mastermind and, yes, a Super Bowl champion. Shockingly, though, Mike Shanahan has a new title: Unemployed coach.

Shanahan became the latest and most stunning victim of the NFL coaching purge, fired Tuesday by the Denver Broncos after a late-season collapse knocked the team out of the playoffs for the third straight year.

Denver has had only one postseason victory since John Elway retired in 1999 following back-to-back championships.

Shanahan finishes with an enviable 146-91 over 14 seasons in Denver, including playoffs. However, his final game was an uncharacteristic 52-21 loss to San Diego with the division title on the line.

The Broncos' defense gave up 448 points, third worst in the NFL, including 112 during the three-game collapse at the end.

It was ranked 29th in yards allowed and tied for last in the NFL with a minus-17 turnover margin.

Maybe the final straw was the historic collapse at the end of this season that saw Denver becoming the first team since divisional play started in 1967 to blow a three-game lead with three games left.

Caroline Kennedy Senate quest takes a “you know” hit

During an interview with the New York Times, Caroline Kennedy (pictured) stumbled badly - even worse than Sarah Palin during her interview with Katie Couric.

Perhaps most damaging of all was her repeated use of the phrase "you know", which she uttered 142 times which was left in the transcript when it appeared in print.

Explaining why she would be a good Senator, she said: "So I think in many ways, you know, we want to have all kinds of different voices, you know, representing us, and I think what I bring to it is, you know, my experience as a mother, as a woman, as a lawyer, you know, I've been an education activist for the last six years here, and, you know, I've written seven books – two on the Constitution, two on American politics.

"So obviously, you know, we have different strengths and weaknesses."

Why the New York Times said Caroline Kennedy was “eloquent” after that interview is a mystery.

But, you know, intelligence is secondary to celebrity, you know, at least, you know, it’s that way it is in politics, you know.

I am personally annoyed by the overuse of OK? I first began hearing it about 20 years ago, OK? And I really dislike it, OK? Sometimes I just quietly walk away from someone talking that way, OK?

Another annoyance is when someone always begins a sentence with the word “look.”

Almost as bad is the constant use of um. I first noticed, um, the overuse of "um" about 30 years ago.

Um, you know, I wonder if the overuse of, you know, um, you know, is it more of a nervous tick or, you know, a twitch or is it a purposeful stall for time, you know, while um, trying to form the next thought?

Back to Caroline Kennedy: did the transcript actually show she said “you know” 142 times? Sounds to me like she qualifies to be a Senator. How soon can they swear her in?

2008: the year man-made global warming was disproved

The man-made global warming myth may go down as the greatest scam perpetrated on the world in recorded history.

With the current cold weather around the globe it may not be long before alarmists go back to their 1970’s global cooling warnings saying we are entering another ice age.

Easily one of the most important stories of 2008 has been all the evidence suggesting that this may be looked back on as the year when there was a turning point in the great worldwide panic over man-made global warming.

Just when politicians in Europe and America have been adopting the most costly and damaging measures politicians have ever proposed, to combat this supposed menace, the tide has turned in three significant respects.

First, all over the world, temperatures have been dropping in a way wholly unpredicted by all those computer models, which have been used as the main drivers of the scare.

Secondly, 2008 was the year when any pretence that there was a "scientific consensus" in favor of man-made global warming collapsed

Thirdly, as banks collapsed and the global economy plunged into its worst recession for decades, harsh reality at last began to break in on those self-deluding dreams, which have for so long possessed almost every politician in the western world.

It is the faltering global economy that should put an end to the ridiculous carbon credit trading schemes designed mainly to make politicians like Al Gore (pictured) and others rich.

All those grandiose projects for "emissions trading", "carbon capture", building tens of thousands more useless wind turbines, switching vast areas of farmland from producing food to "biofuels", are being exposed as no more than enormously damaging and futile gestures, costing astronomic sums we no longer possess.

Democrats need to fill two Senate seats

(click on cartoon to enlarge)

Does DNA qualify her for NY Senate seat?

A report at the link below in titled: Inherit the what?

The report says the Kennedy legacy isn’t what it used to be.

Seventy-six years ago, in 1932, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. gave a timely endorsement to - Franklin D. Roosevelt, and, as a reward, was appointed chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (and later ambassador to the Court of St. James), from which perch he launched the political careers of his sons.

In 2008, his granddaughter Caroline (pictured) gave a timely endorsement to Barack Obama, and now he's elevated his rival, Hillary Clinton, from her Senate seat to his cabinet.

Caroline is claiming that seat for herself in an effort to revive and extend her family's political presence, which in light of the age and illness of Uncle Ted seems to be fading away.

A prime difference is that Grand-father Kennedy was amply qualified for the SEC post and endorsed Roosevelt on his own behalf, while Caroline's sole qualification for being a senator is her being a Kennedy, and she endorsed Obama less in her own right than in her dead father's name.

The only thing that seems to qualify Caroline is her DNA. How committed is she to working hard in the Senate?

We really don’t know anything about her. But then, we really don’t know anything about Barack Hussein Obama and he will be in the White House soon.

The following isn’t difficult to imagine: “Oh, please Uncle Teddy, can I have a Senate seat? Please! I’m bored and really want a Senate seat to play with!”

Scientific illiteracy surrounds Obama and other celebs

An article at the link below is titled Scientific illiteracy all the rage among the glitterati.

When it comes to science, Barack Obama (upper picture) is no better than many of us. Today he joins the list of shame of those in public life who made scientifically unsupportable statements in 2008.

Kate Moss, Oprah Winfrey (lower picture) and Demi Moore all get high marks for scientific illiteracy.

The Celebrities and Science Review 2008 , prepared by the group Sense About Science, identifies some of the worst examples of scientific illiteracy among those who profess to know better – including top politicians.

Mr. Obama and John McCain blundered into the MMR vaccine row during their presidential campaigns. "We've seen just a skyrocketing autism rate," said President-elect Obama. "Some people are suspicious that it's connected to the vaccines. This person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it," he said.

His words were echoed by Mr McCain. "It's indisputable that [autism] is on the rise among children, the question is what's causing it," he said. "There's strong evidence that indicates it's got to do with a preservative in the vaccines."

Exhaustive research has failed to substantiate any link to vaccines or any preservatives. The rise in autism is thought to be due to an increased awareness of the condition.

Kate Moss, Oprah Winfrey and Demi Moore all espoused the idea that you can detoxify your body with either diet (scientifically unsupportable) or, in the case of Moore, products such as "highly trained medical leeches" which make you bleed.

Scientists point out that diet alone cannot remove toxins and that blood itself is not a toxin, and even if it did contain toxins, removing a little bit of it is not going to help.
