The largest maker of men's tailored clothing in the U.S. traces its roots to 1872, when brothers Harry and Max Hart opened a men's clothing store in Chicago.
In recent years, the company struggled as casual dressing eclipsed the need for suits. Tight credit markets and a retreat in consumer spending, especially for luxury clothing, dealt the company its latest blow.
Hartmarx makes business, casual and golf apparel under brands that include Hart Schaffner Marx, Hickey Freeman, Sansabelt and Christopher Blue.
The Company's Canadian and other non-U.S. affiliates have not sought bankruptcy protection.
