Ready Set Shake! California earthquake drill

More than 5 million people are took part in what was billed as the nation's largest-ever earthquake drill.

The Great Southern California ShakeOut was designed to create earthquake awareness.

The photo above was taken in Northridge, California January 17, 1994 showing earthquake damage to the parking structure on the campus of California State University. The bowed columns are of reinforced concrete.

Public safety experts hope the Great Southern California ShakeOut will erase any complacency about preparing for the region's seismic dangers.

“ Californians need to be prepared to take care of themselves for at least 72 hours after an earthquake,” said Greg Renick of the state Office of Emergency Services.
